Het Nobelcomité prees de EU omdat landen die elkaar eeuwenlang bevochten, na 1945 zijn gaan samenwerken. Die verzoening tussen bijvoorbeeld Frankrijk, Duitsland en hun buren staat centraal in de Europese samenwerking.
The Nobel Committee praised the EU because countries that had fought each other for centuries began to cooperate after 1945. This reconciliation between, for example, France, Germany and their neighbours is central to European cooperation.
