State & history

Which electoral system is used to elect members of Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament?

  • A First past the post
  • ✕ Closed party list system Your answer
  • ✓ Proportional representation with a single transferable vote (PR-STV)
  • D Two-round run-off voting

Not quite.

Voters rank candidates in order of preference (1, 2, 3 and so on) in multi-seat constituencies. Votes can transfer to other candidates, so seats broadly match the votes cast.
