Everyday life

You have old Royal Mail stamps marked '1st' with no price printed on them. The price of a first class stamp has since gone up. What is true?

  • A They are only valid if you add a 10p stamp
  • B They expired at the end of the year they were bought
  • ✓ They are still valid for first class post at today's rate
  • ✕ They can only be used for letters inside your own town Your answer

Not quite.

Stamps showing '1st' or '2nd' instead of a price are 'non-value indicator' stamps, so they stay valid at the current rate even after prices rise. Note that older everyday stamps without a barcode had to be swapped for barcoded ones from 2023.
